Did you know that two streams formed what we refer to as Haleakala Crater? Starting out separately, these two streams caused depressions in the mountain, like valleys. Eventually, they met and formed the crater. This of course took place during a time of dormancy, but the mountain wasn't finished. Volcanic activity resumed and filled much of the valley formed by the streams. To top it off, a series of volcanic bombs, ash, spatter and cinder colorfully developed the cones we see there today.

Haleakala's last bout of volcanic activity was not so historically distant as you might think. While George Washington was giving the first State of the Union Address in 1790, Haleakala was erupting. Is the “House of the Sun” finished with its geological fireworks? Fortunately, we have found no sign that its activity will resume.
