This month's real estate surprise wound up being last month's rebound of new home building. Housing starts wound up increasing in February to 583,000 from January's record low of 477,000. This new home construction constituted a 22 percent increase between January and February nationwide.

This 22 percent jump from January to February is still 48.5 percent below levels at this time last year, according to the Commerce Department. The surge in new home construction has been attributed to an 83 percent increase in multi-family construction, whereas single-family home building rose by only 1.1 percent.
